The word “allegiant” implies unwavering loyalty, yet after watching this latest installment in the Divergent series, one’s loyalty to the franchise is severely tested. Picking up immediately after the fall of the faction system, Allegiant Part 1 follows Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) as they venture beyond the wall surrounding Chicago. What they discover is a desolate, genetically scarred landscape and a sophisticated new society run by the bureaucratic David (Jeff Daniels). The revelation that their world is a genetic experiment gone wrong is intriguing on paper, but the film struggles to translate that intrigue into compelling drama.
