But the turtle cove remained untouched. The wind blew the ash west. The sea stayed calm.

And so Asiati grew.

And she listened .

From the cove, they watched the sky turn red and black. They watched the eastern half of their island disappear under a river of fire. They watched their houses, their fields, their well—the well where Asiati had sat as a child—vanish beneath a shroud of ash. asiati
