The last thing Elara saw was the CHKN Extractor powering up on its own, its glass chamber open and waiting.

Elara adjusted the brass goggles on her forehead and stared at the creature in the glass chamber. It had once been a perfectly fine Rhode Island Red named Clucky One. Now, it was a pale, featherless thing that mewed softly and tried to burrow into the straw. chkn extractor

Clucky Two went in next. Same red feathers, same stupid sideways glance. The machine hummed, rattled, and produced a second golden vial. Inside the chamber, Clucky Two did not mew. It unfurled a long, segmented limb and pressed it against the glass. Its skin was smooth, wet, and the color of a deep bruise. She ran the diagnostics. The CHKN Extractor worked by isolating the telos —the Aristotelian final cause—of the animal. For a chicken, the telos was simple: to scratch, to peck, to fear foxes, to become soup. Remove that, and you were left with the biological raw material, untethered from any evolutionary plan. It was, in theory, a blank slate.
