Elena turned the page. The exercises were blank. But at the very bottom, in shaky letters, Nonna had written a final note:

Halfway through, Elena found a chapter titled “Unexpected Situations.” The grammar focused on the conditional: If I had known, I would have… In the margins, Nonna had written a real story. Elena turned the page

Elena had always seen the world in tidy compartments. For every problem, there was a solution; for every question, an answer in the back of the book. Life, she believed, was a multiple-choice exam. Then her grandmother, Nonna, died, leaving her a worn-out English coursebook from 1982. Patel at the bus stop

“Dear one who reads this, You are studying English for a reason. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. The most important sentence is never in the answer key. It is the one you speak from your heart. Go. Live your ‘if.’”

“She used it when she first immigrated,” her mother said. “She couldn’t speak a word. She learned from this book.”
