In the 16th century, the Spanish ambassador described England’s Henry VIII as having a "stinking breath" and a leg ulcer that oozed perpetually. Yet, Henry was also a Renaissance prince who bathed daily by the standards of the era. The concept of the "filthy king" is paradoxical. Monarchs possessed two bodies: a natural, decaying one (subject to sweat, feces, and disease) and a political, immortal one (the symbol of the state).
