You will cry in Episode 1. This series asks tough questions about what it means to be human. The manga is great, but the anime’s soundtrack makes the heartbreak hit harder.
Specifically, watch the Mugen Train movie (or arc). The story is standard "hero's journey," but the animation studio Ufotable does things with light and water effects that look like moving paintings.
The art by Tatsuki Fujimoto is chaotic, cinematic, and raw. While the anime has incredible fight scenes, the manga’s rough sketches capture a desperation the smooth animation misses. Part 2 is currently ongoing and absolutely unhinged.
