He stood in the back of the dojo, tying his white belt for the hundredth time. Around him, green and brown belts practiced their kata —precise, powerful forms. Kenji’s moves were sloppy. He felt like a ghost in a room full of warriors.
Sensei didn’t gasp. He didn’t cry. He simply nodded, as if Kenji had told him the weather was rainy. “That is a heavy storm to carry alone. Have you told your parents?”
Kenji tucked it into his gi. He had become what the card promised: a survivor. Not because he was strong alone, but because he had learned the most important karate lesson of all—the hardest opponent to face is the silence inside, and the strongest block is asking for help.
