I tried to scream, but my mouth wouldn’t move. I couldn’t blink. I was no longer looking at the screen; the screen was looking through me. The final percentage ticked up.

I left it on the kitchen table and went to make tea. When I returned, the screen was no longer blue. It was black. Pure, endless, glowing black. And in the center, in a crisp, green terminal font, was a single line: mdsched results

I stared at the screen for a full minute. My reflection stared back, pale and gaunt in the monitor’s glow. Slowly, almost of its own accord, my hand reached for the ‘Y’ key. I didn’t press it. I just rested my finger on the cool plastic. I tried to scream, but my mouth wouldn’t move
