Shumbha sends the demon Sugriva to the Goddess with a marriage proposal. She calmly replies, "I am not a woman who will marry anyone who merely asks. I have a vow: whoever defeats me in battle and proves stronger than my pride will be my husband. Let Shumbha come and fight." Shumbha sends a messenger named Durdha with an army. The Goddess easily destroys them with a mere "Om" sound.
Next, the demon Raktabija enters the battle. His boon: every time a drop of his blood falls on the ground, a new duplicate Raktabija springs up. The Gods panic. The battlefield floods with thousands of clones. The Goddess then summons Kali (a fiercer form of Chamunda). Kali spreads her enormous tongue and drinks every drop of Raktabija's blood before it touches the ground, while the Goddess kills the original.
