Then someone sneezed.

Instead, Ero did the unthinkable. He took a shard of the Sharpness—a single, perfect, painful point—and brought it back to the edge of the Smudge. With it, he began to draw. world of smudge

The closer he got, the more he changed. His grey haze condensed into skin, then pores, then a tiny, unique scar on his knee he never knew he had. His thoughts, once a gentle murmur, became sharp, loud, and singular. He felt pain for the first time—a bright, horrible line of it. But he also felt joy . Then someone sneezed

And the Smudge… changed. It didn’t disappear, but the other Smudglings, seeing Ero’s small, brave line, began to feel the ache for a shape of their own. They didn’t want sharp, cruel borders. But they wanted edges that held. Edges that meant here I am, and here I am not. With it, he began to draw

“I don’t want to be everything,” Ero replied, his voice a wisp of smoke. “I want to be something .”

He drew a circle around his own heart. A boundary. A promise. It wasn’t a wall to keep others out, but a shape to let himself in.
